Robusta Under the Microscope

What six months of coffee science and market reporting from publicly indexed sources from February to August 2026 — actually told us about Coffea canephora.

Robusta has spent the last decade being talked about as the coffee industry’s insurance policy: hardier than arabica, cheaper, and increasingly hard to avoid in a blend. The research published since February 2026 is more interesting than that framing suggests. Scientists have largely stopped arguing about whether robusta is resilient and started working out which plants, measured how, and at what return to the farmer. 

Breeding is being treated as infrastructure, not a hobby

The anchor document of this period is a review in Frontiers in Plant Science led by Robert Kawuki of World Coffee Research, published in December 2025 and widely picked up from early February. Fourteen co-authors across eight breeding programmes and three continents took stock of more than a century of canephora selection.

Their diagnosis is blunt. Robusta improvement has been held back by fragmented breeding efforts, limited sharing of genetic resources between programmes, and breeding cycles measured in decades — timelines the authors argue are simply incompatible with a climate that is redrawing growing regions within a single farmer’s working life. The proposed fix is structural rather than technical: coordinated international networks, better phenotyping, demand-led breeding guided by explicit target product profiles, and funding that treats variety development as shared industry infrastructure.

That is not purely theoretical. World Coffee Research brought robusta into its Innovea breeding network in 2025 in partnership with Vietnam, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Rwanda and Uganda; six countries that between them export roughly 64% of the world’s robusta.

A cheap field test for drought tolerance

In late May, a Ugandan–French team from Makerere University, Uganda’s National Coffee Research Institute, IRD and CIRAD published a drought-screening study in PLOS ONE. They put a large set of Ugandan canephora genotypes through a controlled drought cycle and tracked how each one coped.

Drought degraded water relations, gas exchange and photosystem II efficiency across every group of plants; no genotype escaped unharmed. But 24 held up noticeably better, maintaining stable photosynthetic function and less negative pre-dawn water potential under severe stress.

The genuinely useful result is the measurement, not the plant list. Two chlorophyll-fluorescence traits (the photosynthetic performance index and the Fv/F₀ ratio), turned out to be the most reliable predictors of drought tolerance. Fluorescence readings are fast, non-destructive and can be taken with a handheld instrument in the field, which is exactly what a breeding programme screening thousands of seedlings needs. The authors are careful to note that the drought index they used has been validated in barley, tobacco and sorghum but not previously in a perennial tree crop; this study is testing that transfer, not confirming it. Their data and analysis code were published openly.

The most productive clone is not always the most profitable one

A Brazilian team led by Alana Mara Kolln, working across IFRO, INCAPER and Embrapa, published a five-season evaluation in the journal Plants in early July. Twenty-eight canephora clones were grown under identical management in Ouro Preto do Oeste, Rondônia, and assessed from 2021 to 2025 — not just for yield, but for yield stability and gross revenue under four different price scenarios.

Across the trial, cumulative yield reached 306 bags per hectare, averaging 61 bags per hectare per season. Six clones: BAG19, BRS1216, GJ8, GJ25, AS2 and BAG24; consistently combined high output with steadiness, delivering an 85% increase in mean yield and a 61% increase in mean gross revenue relative to the trial average. Usefully for growers, those six belong to different compatibility groups, so they can be planted together to support cross-pollination.

Two findings deserve attention from anyone reading variety trial data. First, differences in raw yield potential drove gross revenue more than biennial bearing did which is the alternating on-and-off-year swing that dominates conversations about coffee productivity. Second, stability paid off differently depending on the price environment: steady clones protected income when prices were flat or falling, while erratic high-yielders occasionally won when a bumper harvest happened to land in an expensive year. The authors are explicit that this is luck, not a strategy, and that stability remains the reliable choice. They are equally explicit that they modelled gross revenue, not profit,however, production costs were not included.

Variety mixes and the bitterness problem

In early May, Nestlé and Côte d’Ivoire’s CNRA announced results from a programme running since 2018 across 18 varieties and four growing regions. Their headline claim is that planting a mix of six registered varieties raised yields by up to 86% over the commonly used local variety on the same inputs, and that sensory panels found less bitterness and fewer of the woody notes robusta is often criticised for (a varietal problem, not an indictment on all robustas). The six varieties have been registered in Côte d’Ivoire and will be distributed through cooperatives under the Nescafé Plan.

This is a company announcement rather than a peer-reviewed paper, and the comparison is against an unimproved local variety, suggesting a baseline that flatters any modern selection. Worth watching, worth waiting for the publication.

The market flipped from scarcity to surplus

For roasters, this was the story of the half-year. February’s ICO data showed composite coffee prices down 10% month-on-month, and by mid-March robusta futures had hit a seven-month low as traders priced in a strong Brazilian harvest. The direction of travel held. By late July the USDA was forecasting record global output of 189.7 million bags for 2026/27 (up 6%) with robusta at 83.8 million bags, marginally down year-on-year but still the second-highest figure on record. Vietnam’s crop is expected to rise for a third consecutive year to about 31.4 million bags.

The physical market followed. ICE robusta inventories bottomed at 3,631 lots in mid-May and had rebuilt to a four-month high of 4,254 lots by late July, while London certified stocks rose to 0.68 million bags in June. Vietnam exported 1.05 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, up 7.3% year-on-year. London futures spent the period roughly between $3,300 and $3,900 per tonne, a bit volatile, but a long way from the 2025 peaks.

Two caveats. Volatility did not go away: heavy rain in Minas Gerais, a US tariff on Brazilian coffee, and El Niño headlines all produced sharp intra-month reversals. And a good deal of trade commentary in July still described robusta as “historically tight” and “near record highs,” which is difficult to reconcile with record forecast production and rebuilding inventories. If you are making buying decisions, check the date and the source on any price narrative you read.

What this adds up to for roasters

The near-term picture is more robusta, more cheaply, from more origins. The medium-term picture is a species finally getting the breeding investment arabica has had for a century, with the first practical tools; field-portable drought screening, and economics-aware clone selection. The cup-quality question remains the least settled: the strongest claims about improved sensory profiles this half-year came from a company rather than an independent panel. That is the gap the next six months of research needs to close. Maybe they need to do similar work on the Trinidad varieties of superior flavour robustas!
